The secret of the name "Panda"

Hello! This is duz😄

Today, we are going to learn the secrets of 'Panda', which is popular worldwide.

Are you ready to find out about 'Panda'?

Let's start now!

『The Origin of the 'Panda' Name』

If you search for the types of pandas, you can see that there are two types of pandas.

In other words, they are 'Giant Panda' and 'Redpanda'.

But these are very different species.

Giant pandas, commonly called pandas, are a kind of bear, Redpandas are a kind of redpanda.

Even scholars who studied giant pandas 100 years after they were known did not know that they were bears and thought they were of the same species as red pandas.

The name 'Panda' was originally given to Red Panda, but with the appearance of 'Giant Panda', 'lesser' was added to mean a small panda and became 'Leser Panda'.🐼

After that, they analyzed the genes in the 1970s and found out that giant pandas were bears.😂

Red Panda and Giant Panda

(Giant Panda)

Giant pandas and red pandas are now recognized as very different species, but scholars who studied pandas at the time thought they were the same species.

Let's see what the giant panda and the red panda are similar to each other. 🧐

《The staple food is bamboo》

When the word 'panda' was first given to red pandas, the meaning of 'panda' was to refer to an animal whose main food was bamboo.

Both types of pandas are mainly made of bamboo, and a 'fake thumb' called the sixth finger has developed to eat bamboo well.

Pandas use this fake thumb to grab the bamboo and pull off the leaves.

Also, giant pandas and red pandas are both carnivores and carnivores.

However, the two types of pandas are mainly made of bamboo, even though they are carnivores.

The difference here is that giant pandas have the digestive system of carnivores, but they don't eat meat at all,

Red pandas enjoy eating bamboo as an omnivore, but they also eat fruits and eggs and small animals such as rodents.

《A high-altitude habitat

Giant pandas live in the high mountains (2700-3900 m above sea level) of the Sichuan Mountains in China, and red pandas live in the highlands of 1400-1800 m above sea level southwest of the Himalayan mountain range.

Both types of pandas live in the high mountains where bamboo grows. ⛰

《Independent life and breeding season

Red pandas and giant pandas live almost alone except during breeding season.

Giant pandas have two to three days of rutting once a year in spring and early summer, and red pandas have breeding seasons from June to August, during which they behave in pairs 💑

Giant pandas have a pregnancy period of 95-160 days, and red pandas are similarly 90-150 days.

Today, we learned about giant pandas and red pandas.
When I learned about the red panda and the giant panda, I thought that scholars might think they were the same species, so it was a fun time.

I'll be back with a fun and informative post next time.
