Let's learn about World Penguin Day, which falls on April 25th

Hello! This is DUZ :)

April 25th is World Penguin Day.

In Ross Sea, Antarctica, where McMurdo Station is located, Emperor penguins and Adelie penguins mainly inhabit.

Especially, Adelie penguins are known to migrate northward around April when the sea freezes.

Although their exact route has not been determined yet, it is said that they often pass by McMurdo Station around April 25th, which led to the establishment of this day as a commemoration.

The date, April 25th, was chosen as a commemoration to protect penguins disappearing due to global warming and habitat destruction, aligning with the time when Antarctic penguins move northward to avoid extinction.

Why are penguins endangered?

Among the 17 species of penguins that currently inhabit the world, 11 are designated as endangered or vulnerable species by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

One of the main reasons for the endangerment of penguins is the decline in the population of krill, their primary food source, which is attributed to global warming.

As sea ice melts due to global warming, not only does the food supply of krill, which grows under the sea ice, decrease, but also krill is being overexploited industrially for products like omega-3 supplements and fishing bait.

So, what can we do to help penguins?

Let's explore together and think about it, and try to practice it in our daily lives too!

Reducing fossil fuel consumption.

Reducing fossil fuel usage is crucial, and using alternative energy sources can help decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

Actively utilizing renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro power is advisable.

Utilizing eco-friendly transportation.

Minimizing the use of personal vehicles by opting for public transportation, cycling, or walking is essential.

How about we all prioritize walking or cycling for short distances, promoting both personal health and environmental conservation?

Using eco-friendly transportation methods like electric cars is also considered a positive step.

Changing food consumption habits

Reducing meat consumption and consuming more plant-based foods can help decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

These days, many vegan alternatives are being released, which are designed with the Earth in mind.

It seems like we can enjoy delicious and healthy foods without meat. 😋

It would be good to purchase environmentally friendly foods by adopting sustainable agricultural and production methods.

Reducing waste.

By using recyclable materials and products, we can reduce waste and protect resources.

Let's consider environmentally friendly consumption and waste management methods.

We can all use reusable baskets instead of plastic bags, opt for reusable items over disposable ones, and diligently participate in recycling efforts, which could help penguins.

Since there are many beautiful recycled products available, why not take some time to think about our consumption habits as well?

Education and Promotion

It is also important to educate and promote awareness of the severity of climate change and how to address it, in order to change people's perceptions and encourage action.

It's not enough for just one person to make changes; effective change requires the collective effort of many individuals.

Let's raise awareness about the seriousness of climate change for the sake of penguins and apply the ideas discussed above into our daily lives to protect them.

Today, we learned about World Penguin Day and explored what we can do for penguins.

I wonder if it was an enjoyable and informative time for you.

I'll be back with more interesting and informative pet-related posts next time.

Have a great day with the DUZ!
